What is guiformat?

FAT32 GUI Formatter (guiformat) is a small, portable Windows tool from RidgeCrop Consultants that formats an existing partition to FAT32, including volumes larger than 32GB that the Windows graphical formatter will not offer FAT32 for. It does not create or resize partitions. Download guiformat · Is guiformat safe?

How do I format a USB drive to FAT32 on Windows 11?

Back up the drive first, open guiformat as administrator, pick the correct drive letter, choose an allocation unit size, and click Start. Formatting erases everything on that drive, so double-check the letter before you confirm. Full guide: format a USB drive to FAT32 on Windows 11

Why does Windows refuse FAT32 for drives over 32GB?

The Windows graphical formatter (Explorer and Disk Management) does not offer FAT32 for volumes over 32GB. The command line and guiformat do not have that graphical restriction. Why the 32GB limit exists · FAT32 vs exFAT vs NTFS

Why does guiformat say “Failed to open device”?

Almost always the drive is still in use: an Explorer window, an open file, or another program has it locked. Close everything using the drive, eject and reinsert it, and try again as administrator. Fix “Failed to open device”

How long does guiformat take?

Quick format is fast on any size; a full format is slow and scales with the drive. If a quick format seems stuck, check whether the drive is actually still busy before cancelling. How long does guiformat take? · Quick vs full format

What allocation unit size should I choose?

For most USB drives and SD cards, the default 32K is a safe choice. Some devices have their own rule — for 3DS cards, 32K below 64GB and 64K at 64GB and above — so follow your device’s own guide where one exists. Allocation unit size explained

Is guiformat safe, and why does SmartScreen warn me?

Guiformat is an unsigned, older binary, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning. That is expected for unsigned software and is not proof of malware — but it is also not proof of safety. Download from our download page, compare the file hash with the one printed there, and do not run the file if the hash does not match. Is guiformat safe? · SmartScreen walkthrough

Can I format without losing my data?

No. Formatting erases the volume. Back up first, format, then restore — there is no format option that keeps your files in place. Format without losing data (backup first)

How do I check the format worked?

After formatting, check the file system in Windows and run a disk check to confirm the volume reads cleanly. Verify a FAT32 format with chkdsk
